Virtual reality is not a modern concept. The first mention of virtual reality or VR can be traced back to Antonin Artaud, a French poet and essayist, in 1938. While the idea dates back to a couple of decades, it is only with the current developments in technology that the potentials of virtual reality is realized.

Late in 2015, Samsung Electronics released their flagship virtual reality headset called Samsung Gear VR. The device is compatible with a number of Samsung Galaxy smartphones which acts as the headsets display and processor. Consequently, Oculus Rift, which was manufactured through a kickstarter campaign, would be officially available under two weeks. Unlike the Gear VR, the Oculus rift would be connected to a personal computer running Microsoft Windows through a cable.

The device mentioned above are revolutionary. However, there is one upcoming virtual reality headset that might blow any other competition out of the running completely.

Sulon Technologies, a start-up company based in Toronto, Canada, unveiled their virtual reality headset called Sulon Q last March 14, 2016. Unlike all other VR device available in the market, Sulon Q is the first tether-free VR headset. This means that the Sulon Q requires neither a computer nor a mobile smartphone device to operate.  Instead the Sulon Q is powered by a Spatial Processing Unite located at the back of the device itself.

"As a powerful and lightweight all-in-one solution that combines VR and AR capabilities with real-time spatial mapping, the Sulon Q^TM headset offers an experience that's unlike anything else. As we put the finishing touches on it and ready for launch in late spring, we hope everyone enjoys this sneak peek and is equally excited about the forthcoming headset as we are" gushed Dhanushan Balachandreswaran, CEO of Sulon Technologies Inc.

The specific date for Sulon Q's release date has yet to be announced. Sulon Technologies has also yet to confirm the pricing for their VR device. Experts from Mashable do expect the headset to cost more than the Samsung Gear VR but less than the steep $599 price tag of the Oculus Rift.
