Since the time of their release, Microsoft's Xbox One and PlayStation 4 from Sony have been in constant rivalry and have evolved into potentially strong contenders in the gaming consoles industry.

Following the long holiday break, Microsoft is back with a new Xbox One software update. The Redmond-based tech giant is scheduled to release the next big update for its flagship console in February.

Insider rumors claim that the impending update will upgrade the Xbox One home screen and will let users rearrange pins as well as update their activity feed in the instance that something new has come up. Another major upgrade is the Gamerscore leaderboard which allows users to update their achievements and compare it with their friends.

With the upcoming update, users can easily join their friend's Twitch stream directly from a game's tile or hub. Users will also be notified about which party they are joining and will receive better friend suggestions. They will also have the option to hide all contents that they do not want to install into their system.

Microsoft is also teasing Xbox One users about a couple of features that are shared with the Xbox app, smartphone and PC apps. Additionally, there is also a newly added Avatar Store and an all new Xbox News hub.

In a statement posted on the official Xbox Blog, Microsoft director of program management Mike Ybarra wrote, "We're focused on continuing to improve social features to help you stay connected to the Xbox Live community across console and PC, while bringing these experiences closes together."

Despite all the interesting updates coming to the Xbox One console, one major feature is not included. That feature is background music support. Xbox One owners have been asking for the feature to be added into the console, but it appears that Microsoft has downplayed their request.

According to PC Mag, at least 22,000 Xbox One owners have all voted to bring background music support to the Xbox One. The feature is already active on the Sony PlayStation 4 console via the PlayStation Music app.

The news was not well received by Xbox One gamers, and some of them took their frustrations on social networking sites.
