"Psychonauts" developer Double Fine Productions announced on Jan. 12 that the classic game is heading to the PlayStation 4 this spring. The game is not a remastered version but rather a port of the game's original PlayStation 2 version.

Despite the massive attention received by the upcoming sequel, "Psychonauts 2," it was the original title that made waves all over the gaming community this week.

Double Fine Productions community manager James Spafford posted on the official PlayStation blog, "We're super excited to announce that our classic PS2 platformer Psychonauts is heading to PS4 this sprint!"

"Psychonauts" puts players into the shoes of a young psychic named Razputin. The game follows his quest in order to join an elite group of international psychic secret agents called Psychonauts.

"Psychonauts" is a platform game and was originally published for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Microsoft Windows. Following its release, the game was met with massive critical praise. However, despite its appeal to the critics, the game did not perform well in sales.

Video game statistics claims that the game only manage to sell about 100,000 copies. The game was a big financial failure that it started a string of events that would eventually lead to the closure of Majesco, the game's original publisher. According to Wired, despite the game's commercial failure, it managed to gain a dedicated cult following. On top of that, the game also received several video game awards at the time it was released.

Double Fine acquired the rights to the game and published it on the digital platform. The studio also programmed the game so that it will support newer consoles and gaming systems. Double Fine would later claim that the digital distribution of the game has far eclipsed the original release. As of December 2015, the digital release of "Psychonauts" managed to garner more than 1.7 million sales.

Last week, the crowdfunding campaign for "Psychonauts 2" successfully reached its goal. In total, the crowdfunding campaign managed to raise $3.8 million with nearly half of it coming from investors. Double Fine Productions estimates that game development will take at least a couple of years and plans to release the game sometime in 2018.
