German automaker Volkswagen released the official specs list of the Tiguan GTE Active Concept weeks ahead of the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. On Sunday, the car manufacturer officially took the wraps off the next generation SUV that sports a hybrid drivetrain that combines gas and electric power.

Motoring experts believe that the new Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept will serve as a replacement to the current Tiguan model which desperately needs the long overdue upgrade.

The new Tiguan GTE Active Concept sports two electric motors, instead of one, which powered each axle. The hybrid SUV is designed to primarily run on its all-electric mode which has an estimated max range of about 20 miles. While running in the all-electric mode, the SUV will only its rear wheels.

On the other hand, the new Tiguan GTE Active Concept has a sensor capable of determining the type of terrain the car is running on. In occasions that the terrain demands or when the driver selects the 4Motion Action Control, the secondary electric motor driving the front wheels will be activated in order to provide additional power.

The Tiguan GTE sports a direct injected TSI and turbocharged gasoline engine It is capable of power output of as much as 148 horsepower and 184 lb-ft worth of torque.

The two electric motors get their power from a 12.4 kWh battery. The rear electric motor can produce 114 horsepower, while the rear one is capable of producing up to 54 horsepower. In off-road conditions and provided that the two electric motors are turned on, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept can deliver up to 221 horsepower.

Using the SUV's control system, drivers can change the car's traction control in order to suit any terrain condition. Supported modes are Sand, Sludge, Gravel, Rocks, Snow, Sport and the Battery Hold which when activated constantly charges the battery.

The Tiguan GTE can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, provided that the hybrid system is producing 221 horsepower. It has a listed top speed of 120 miles per hour.

According to CNet, the interior of the Tiguan GTE Active Concept is highlighted by the 9.2-inch touchscreen which can be used to control the car's infotainment features as well as other car related modes.

According to Auto Week, the Volkswagen GTE Active Concept is expected to hit the market sometime in 2017.
