In the U.S. alone, Nintendo's first social mobile app - Miitomo - was downloaded by 1.6 million people from March 31 through April 3. Over the next 12 months, the company plans to release four more games for iOS and Android devices.

According to industry-tracking firm Sensor Tower, the number of downloads include both iOS and Android; excluding the days spend by Miitomo at the top of the download chart on both platforms. Now, Miitomo is at no.10 on Sensor Tower. The app fall is said to be likely due to the release of Disney Crossy Road yesterday.

Some other apps have still been able to stay at the top for long. Now it is time for Nintendo to make millions of its favorite mobile players pay for the game. Since the market is worth $34.8 billion and growing, the publisher got into making mobile games. Miitomo is one such launch that helps the company capture this revenue.

Not only in the U.S., but Miitomo's debut in the Japanese market earlier in March also was a huge success, though 51 percent of the app downloads was from the U.S. Other regions that contributed to some percentage each of the app downloads were Germany, Canada, France and Great Britain. This year is only the first move of Nintendo into mobile.

In the next few months, it is going to launch some more games for iOS and Android. The publisher plans to alert players about the new launches and give bonuses for the game installation. Miitomo looks more like a video game for the coming days, though as of now, its take is on social networking. It is going to be a kind of promotional hub for such games. It is also expected that more traditional gaming mechanics will be included in the apps to come in future.
