Samsung's Family Hub Refrigerator is a $5,000 smart fridge that features many practical ideas including a 21.5-inch, 1080-pixel touchscreen on one of the doors, powered by the tech giant's Tizen operating system. The display looks like a large Android phone, but does not seem to be an tablet computer that was just added to the new refrigerator.

Family Hub includes many key features. They include a Gorilla Glass-covered touchscreen, Internet of Things (IoT), and selfie-snapping, according to ElectronicHouse.

The refrigerator is a four-door model, with the two top doors for refrigeration, and the bottom doors for freezing. Samsung's FlexZone gives owners the ability to switch the top/bottom areas for refrigeration or freezing.

Family Hub provides various touch screen features of old-school fridges. They include leaving notes to family members, providing calendar reminders, pinning photos, or showcasing art.

A new feature included on the new Samsung smart fridge is a built-in speaker, according to PC Mag. This allows people to use the TV like a refrigerator when cooking in the kitchen.

There are also three cameras inside the refrigerator door that snap a shot every time the fridge door closes. The appliance's Wi-Fi connectivity allows people to use a mobile app to view the refrigerator's interior from anywhere, such as a grocery store.

Family Hub owners can date the items that are inside the refrigerator by using the touch display. This allows them to track how long items have been in the appliance, to determine when a carton of milk is spoiled.

Another feature of the smart refrigerator eliminates the need to go grocery shopping. The appliance is pre-loaded with a MasterCard shopping app that allows owners to order items from ShopRite or FreshDirect.

Samsung has reported that it is also planning to add Amazon's tech assistant Alexa. It would provide the same functionality as the Amazon Echo smart speaker.

Family Hub Refrigerator is scheduled to be available in Spring 2016. It will have a price tag of about $5,000. Some options include counter/full depth models and stainless/black stainless color options.

This is not Samsung's first connected refrigerator. It has introduced two models since 2012.
