Mercedes-Benz is reversing the trend of human workers being replaced by robots, by pulling some mechanical workers from its assembly line and substituting them with real people. That is because the number of customized options for the S-Class sedans is difficult for the robotic workers to handle.

The Mercedes cars include many different custom options. They include carbon fiber trim, tire caps, and temperature-controlled cup holders, according to Engadget.

Markus Schaefer is the head of production for Mercedes-Benz. He explained that robots cannot keep up with all the customization and production options. Hiring more human workers saves the company money.

The robots are having a difficult time with the options available for the autos, which is slowing them down.

The irony is that many automakers are using robotic devices to replace human workers. International Federation of Robotics (IFR) just released a survey reporting that companies will use 1.3 million industrial robots by 2018. In fact, the figure spiked 43 percent between 2013 and 2014.

However, Mercedes continues to provide car buyers with more options. Robots have been unable to adjust to the new tasks so it is better for them to do the same repetitious jobs over and over again.

Robots will still perform tasks at the Sindelfingen factory. However, they will now work beside humans instead of doing tasks alone behind glass.

Mercedes-Benz is one of various companies that are developing robots with sensors to help them work safely beside real human beings. BMW and Audi are working on similar tech.

In other Mercedes news last month the company unveiled its F 015 self-driving concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The German car maker released the first teaser last October.

Its concept car is totally autonomous. Besides that it is also a little bigger than the S-Class vehicles and has a one-box design that transforms the automobile into a luxury cabin, according to Auto Blog.

F 015 includes four bucket seats and the doors open 90 degrees like a Rolls-Royce, but without a B-pillar. The cabin includes six display screens that are built in a "digital arena" with touch screens, gesture-based controls, and eye-tracking tech.
