Microsoft recently revealed a new type of laptop called the Surface Laptop. If reports are anything to go by, Microsoft Surface Laptop is not an answer to much-cheaper Chromebooks.

The Microsoft device sports Windows 10 S - Microsoft's latest Windows operating system, Forbes reported. The latest Windows 10 version is meant to take on Chromebooks and other devices powered by Chrome operating system.

The operating system packs in Google-made web and software-based services - Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Gmail. Chromebooks are especially famous in the education sector.

This is primarily because of the following things - Chromebooks are inexpensive, the software is easy to use, and these devices are up to every task an individual in school may need to accomplish.

Normally, Chromebooks are priced lower than their Windows 10 counterparts. The Surface Laptop, which is meant to challenge Chromebooks, begins at $999.  About 90 percent of Chromebooks hover below the $300 price range.

Some of the features of the Surface Laptop include 14.5 hours of battery life, Intel's 7th-generation processor, and a 13.5-inch PixelSense touch display.

The base model comes with a 128 GB SSD and 4 GB of RAM. Windows 10 S cannot run conventional desktop apps - only apps from the Windows Store, according to Engadget.  With Windows 10 S, users cannot run Google Drive, OpenVPN, iTunes, WhatsApp and Adobe Photoshop.

Over the past few years, there have been many efforts to reimagine laptops. Microsoft had the Surface Book, a portable with detachable touchscreen and a clever hinge back in 2015.

In 2016, Cupertino-based Apple revealed its new MacBook Pro that featured the new Touch Bar. Also, in 2016, Google said that it would allow users run Android apps on Chromebooks, effectively turning these devices into completely-functional PCs.

However, the Surface Book was released with many bugs, and Microsoft didn't get it right till version two released in 2016. The MacBook Pro was plagued with battery life problems because it did not have the power and ports they required.
