The carbon dioxide levels have been consistently increasing. A new report states it has reached an alarming mark 410 PPM.

According to a research carried out by Mauna Loa Observatory that is situated in Hawaii, the carbon dioxide levels have reached a new milestone of 410 PPM (parts per million) on April 18. This is the first time in the history of the mankind that the atmospheric CO2 has reached such high levels.

The observatory has been tracking changes in the atmospheric CO2 since it was established in 1956. Two years after its establishment, the atmospheric CO2 had touched 280 PPM mark. By 20123, the CO2 levels had increased by twofold as it reached 400 PPM. Since then the scientists have been consistently warning the world that CO2 levels in the atmosphere can soon reach a threshold, Mobi Picker reported.

If there is no action taken soon, an irreversible climate change can happen.  A paleoclimate researcher, Gavin Foster has expressed his views by saying that, "these milestones are just numbers, but they give us an opportunity to pause and take stock and act as useful yard sticks for comparisons to the geological record," Climate Central reported.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can greatly influence the climatic conditions of the Earth. One of the simplest ways to bring it under control is to make use of best practices to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide in the air by human activities.

Some may claim that natural climatic actions such as El Nino can contribute to the release of atmospheric CO2 in the recent years. However, researchers have found that the burning of huge amount of fossil fuels by the people has led to alarming levels of CO2 in air. An atmospheric scientist, Pieter Tans who belongs to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said that only when the CO2 emissions in the air reduced by half, the its levels can be brought down.
