Apple Inc. will reportedly soon release augmented reality (AR) glasses and even iPhones. The company founded by Steve Jobs hopes to increase its technological influence by competing with Google and Facebook in the realm of AR devices.

Augmented reality is considered by many as one of the next frontiers of interactive technology. The dawn of fully functional AR and virtual reality devices could signal the downfall of smartphones and similar devices.

"I predict that instead of carrying stylish smartphones everywhere, we'll wear stylish glasses. Those glasses will offer [virtual reality], AR, and everything in between, and we'll use them all day," Futurism quoted Facebook Chief Scientist Michael Abrash saying.

Similar to Facebook, Apple is also cognizant of this possibility. There have been reports that Apple will first introduce the AR technology to iPhones before releasing it to the public via AR glasses, according to MacWorld.

There are reportedly "hundreds of engineers devoted to" Apple's plan to delve into AR technology. The company's iPhone camera team is said to be currently working on AR-related features for the iPhone.

Meanwhile, Apple's augmented reality glasses is said to have gone beyond being just a concept as the company has reportedly started discussing the project with hardware suppliers. Apple has allegedly placed small orders of "near-eye displays" for internal testing.

Another evidence of Apple's ongoing testing of AR technology is a reported incident involving an employee who complained about experiencing discomfort in her eyes. She was later referred to an optometrist after seeing laser flash at several points during the study of the company's AR technology.

All of this information remain in the realm of speculation and the company has set no specific release date yet for th technology.
