New updates for "The Last of Us 2" will feature a possible horseback combat and a long standing rumor in the sequel debunked.

It seems that the long rumored theory of "The Last of Us 2" has been clarified surrounding the possible death of the game's first protagonist Joel and that Ellie is only seeing him as a figment of her imagination. Ellie's voice-actor Ashley Johnson tweeted a photo of her along with Troy Barker, the voice behind Joel, with both actors wearing mocap suits.

Johnson's tweeted photo could be proof that Joel will indeed return to "The Last of Us 2" alive and well, and will probably play a prominent role in the sequel's story. Before theory became debunked, it claimed that Joel's death happened after the first game and before the sequel. Several clues as to why this is happening in 'The Last of Us 2," particularly that Joel did not seem to have aged and he did not help Ellie in what seemed to be a battle and that he spoke in singular. “You sure you wanna do this?” he asked Ellie.

One Reddit user speculated that the Fireflies were able to track down and execute Joel for what he did in “The Last Of Us.” As such, Ellie is out for revenge, with the ghost of Joel (in her mind) following her in"The Last of Us 2's" plot.

Another theory suggest that Joel and Ellie will be at odds with one another and that the wedge that tear them up will be driven by Marlene’s death. Joel killed Marlene to save Ellie in the first game. Both Marlene and Ellie grew close and the love that Ellie had for Marlene and the latter’s death in the hands of Joel might justify her anger.

Though given Naughty Dog’s tendency to keep details under wraps, fans will not be finding out what that role is until the game is released or close to release, Gamerant reported.

Meanwhile, "The Last of Us 2" might have a new game feature as game director Neil Druckmann tweeted a photo game writer Halley Gross riding horseback, teasing that the sequel could have players are able ride horses.

Gross also seems to be brandishing a shotgun, leading some players to speculat that Ellie may well find herself fighting infected enemies from a horse or escaping from them on horseback instead, GamingBolt reported.

"The Last of Us" game also featured horseback gameplay, but its seems that Naughty Dog could be making something interetsing to its gameplay, teasing gamers to take their imagination to whole new level for the sequel.

Previous reports revealed that "Westworld" actress Shannon Woodward joined the cast of "The Last of Us 2" although Naughty Dog did not specify what her role is in the story. There are also rumors that the sequel could be showcased at E3 2017.

There is no release date yet for "The Last of Us 2" on the PlayStation 4.
