Instead of hosting a big event for its new line of products, Apple quietly unveiled the new iPad via a press release. While it may not seem important, the 2017 iPad is actually a major product as it is a successor to the outdated iPad Air 2. How does it fare against the current 9.7-inch alpha: the iPad Pro?

The new iPad 2017 is Cheaper, but has Lower Specs

The iPad Air 2 had the A8X chipset, while the new iPad's processor is the A9, which was first introduced in 2015. The iPad Pros now use the A9X chip, and analysts assume that the next generation of the Pro lineup will have an updated chip. All three models, however, have the same amount of RAM, according to Apple Insider.

Additionally, the iPad 2017 retains the cameras from the iPad Air 2. The rear has an 8-megapixel snapper while the front only has 1.2 megapixels. In comparison, its Pro counterpart has 12 megapixels at the back and 5 megapixels at the front.

Designs are Similar - Almost

In looks, the new iPad is not that different from the iPad Pro. The Inquisitr reported that consumers can easily mistake one for the other - that is until they hold it. There are a few noticeable differences here: the weight and the thickness.

The new iPad 2017 has the usual design elements in place, but it is 1.4mm thicker. Moreover, it weighs up to 478 grams while its predecessor and Pro counterpart only weighs up to 444 grams. The True Tone display and anti-reflective coating of the Pro are also missing from the lower-end iPads. It is also worth noting that the new iPad does not have full support for the Apple Pencil, a necessary tool for professionals.

Although the new iPad is not quite on par with the iPad Pro, it is still a worthy upgrade to the iPad Air 2. It will be available in three colors: Gold, Silver, and Space Gray. Interested buyers can start buying it on March 24 at $329 for th 32GB model with Wi-Fi and at $459 for the 32GB model with Wi-Fi and Cellular connectivity.
