Apple has unveiled its latest 9.7 inches budget device to replace its retired slimline iPad Air family.

Apple announced on Tuesday, March 21,  on its official website the arrival of its new iOS tablet. The company dropped its numbering scheme and called it simply 'iPad.' It will go on sale on Friday, March 24 and will replace the iPad Air 2.

What's new?

According to the International Business Times, the new iPad shares much of the specs and features that made the iPad Air 2 great, including the same 9.7 inches Retina display. The new iPad, however, is slightly heavier weighing 469 grams versus iPad Pro's 437 grams. It is also much thicker measuring 7.5mm compared to the Pro's 6.1mm.

In terms of functionality, the new iPad runs iOs 10 and is powered by Apple's A9 chip which was previously included in the iPhone 6S range. It is an upgrade from the tablet's A8X processor. Internal options are limited to 32 GB or 128 GB. A 4G cellular option is also available.

Some of its key features, meanwhile, include an 8MP rear camera and HD front camera, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and 10-hour battery life as promised.

The Cost

According to Business Wire, Apple will cut the price of the new 9.7 inch iPad by $70. The new iPa,d which comes in silver, gold, and space gray, is said to be the Apple's cheapest which starts at $329 for the 32G with WiFi. A similar model with a cellular option will go on sale for $459.

The prices only apply in the U.S. and will vary in different countries and regions.

Polyurethane smart covers for the new IPad are also available for $39.
