Intel’s new Euclid Computer is Powerful Enough to Power Robots

Chip manufacturer Intel have shared vital information about the mysterious piece of hardware which the company simply calls Euclid. Intel claims that it is a self-contained computer in a miniature form factor the size of a thumb. The company added this small computer is powerful enough to power the brains and eyes of a robot.

Intel announced Euclid in August 2016, and no official release date have been picked yet. The Euclid computer is so small that Intel claims it be held just like a pen. Inside this computer is a built-in 3D RealSense camera, according to Computer World.

Moreover, Euclid's form factor makes it possible for developers to integrate into the eyes of a human-like robot. The 3D RealSense camera inside the computer can capture images in real-time and could help the robots movements. In terms of moving both indoors and outdoors, Euclid is equipped with position and motion sensors.

The Euclid also sports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors which allow developers to remotely control the computer. According to iTechPost, these sensors also allow the Euclid to directly communicate with a personal computer.

At the heart of the Euclid computer is an Atom processor which has enough computing power to analyze and process the images captured by the 3D camera in real-time. The CPU can also act as the brain of the robot telling it how to move and complete certain tasks.

What is even more interesting about the Euclid is that it is powered by a battery pack. It also sports environmental sensors, one of which is a barometric pressure sensor. The computer also has speakers, microphone, USB 3.0 ports, and HDMI port.

The Euclid miniature computer supports Robotics Operating System and the Linux-based Ubuntu operating system. The system is also expected to support Arduino, a software package usually used by developers and enthusiasts in creating basic electronic devices.
