ASUS has released a do-it-yourself friendly single-board computer dubbed the Tinker Board.

The Tinker Board is said to rival the well-known homebrew friendly board, the Raspberry Pi, but with the advantage of being able to play 4K videos, double RAM capacity, and a much faster processor.

ASUS' Tinker Board or the ASUS 90MB0QY1-M0EAY0 is a tiny 8.5 cm by 5.3 cm computer which features a Quad-core ARM Cortex A17 CPU clocked at 1.8GHz coupled with a 2GB Dual channel LPDDR3 memory and an HDMI 2.0 port to support 4k video resolution.

The Tinker Board runs only on a 32-bit processor, unlike the Pi's 64-bit processor. However, the Mali-T764 GPU of the Tinker Board is much more powerful than Broadcom's VideoCore.

Other features of the device include Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a gigabit Ethernet connection which supports SDIO 3.0, and swappable antennae for the built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi module.

The Tinker Board will run on a custom OS which is based on its rival's Debian Linux operating system. ASUS claims that the device will be open to supporting other operating systems like Ubuntu, Kodi, and OpenSUSE. 4k Netflix streaming is out of the question, however, as the Tinker Board can only play videos which are downloaded or created with High-Efficiency Video Coding.

ASUS' Tinker Board costs about 55 GBP ($68.60 USD) which is higher than the cost of the Raspberry Pi. The Tinker Board can be pre-ordered now, and shipping is expected to start next month.
