The Xbox One exclusive, dragon-focused adventure game Scalebound has been canceled. The game supposedly allows players to control a fire-breathing dragon or a sword-wielding warrior on quests.

About a year ago, reports surfaced that Scalebound will be released in 2016. However, the release date was pushed to 2017. Platinum Games said more time was needed for the title to meet the high expectations and deliver unique features and gameplay. There were speculations that the delay was due to the dense lineup of titles to be released in 2016 such as Inside, Below, Quantum Break and Gears of War.

Despite the building excitement, Microsoft Studios has decided to cancel the development of Scalebound and will instead focus on its lineup of games this year including Sea of Thieves, Halo Wars 2, State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3.

The relationship between Platinum Games and Microsoft started to crack after some senior members of the development team took a month off because of heavy workload. Due to this, Scalebound fell behind schedule and with game engine issues, the companies decided to end the game development.

Players would have controlled Drew or his dragon companion Thuban in Scalebound. Thuban was supposed to be controlled in first-person view while Drew, in third-person. Players would have been given the ability to craft the dragon through the Dragon DNA system.
