British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is working on a new technology to prevent the doors of its cars from crashing into nearby objects when opened.

The system uses sensors in the handle as well as the edge of a door so that the car can measure the distance between the door and nearby obstacles like vehicles, walls, and lamp posts. This technology can be used to prevent any damage to a car's doors.

What would the system do in case an obstacle is detected nearby?

According to Daily Mail, the system will alert the driver when it detects a collision risk. Additionally, the door close to the obstacle could become difficult to open or could open only to a certain range, thus lowering the risk damage.

The system could also work together with another warning system to warn pedestrians about the car standing/moving near by.

News of this technology surfaced after the UK car manufacturing company filed a patent for it. It is the latest in a string of in-car technologies to be patented by the company.

In similar news, Jaguar Land Rover is also developing a technology that makes a car open its door as soon as its owner approaches it. The technology uses facial recognition and gait analysis to detect the approaching people with the help of cameras mounted under the windows of the doors capturing both video and still images and then comparing them with those saved on its computer. If they match, the car unlocks and opens the door for the owner. Such a feature could save drivers the hassle of digging out their key when approaching their car and even make it easier if their hands are occupied with things like shopping bags.
