Maserati is currently working on an electric car. However, the company claims the car to be 'very different' from the other electric vehicles around at the moment. Maserati is a division of Fiat Chrysler (FCA), which earlier produced limited edition EV called Fiat 500e.

In an interview with Car & Driver, FCA engineering chief Roberto Fedeli said that the company would soon launch a new electric car. It may be as early as 2019. Fedeli also alluded that the upcoming electric car is likely to be a low volume model. As the automaker is going to be one of the late entrants to the segment, it is looking to bring something radical to the market.

Fedeli also expressed his opinion about Tesla. He claimed that Tesla products are not up to the mark and their execution and quality is on par with "German OEM in the 1970s." He also claimed that solutions provided by Tesla are not the best.

Maserati aims to develop a car which is not only environment-friendly but also has the power and acceleration, which are the hallmarks of Maserati brand. Fedeli said that current lithium-ion batteries are too heavy to be feasible on twists and turns. He added that Maserati would need to have lighter batteries.

Another challenge faced by Maserati will be to give the car a Maserati touch, in the absence of a roaring engine sound. The main impediment in Maserati's way is the current battery technology. Fedeli said that the company's biggest challenge lies in making an electric car as exciting as a sports car on a regular road.
