Amazon's Jeff Bezos oversaw the successful test of Bue Origin's new suborbital spaceship on Wednesday.

The New Shepard capsule launched from a rocket moments after liftoff from the Blue Origin testing site in Texas. The test demonstrated how space tourists and space explorers could escape safely during a real-life emergency after launch.  A webcast of this unmanned space vehicle test was made on the official website of Blue Origin.

New Shepard is the newest space capsule and rocket from the space company. The reusable capsule is designed for space trips to lower Earth orbit.

In November 2015, Blue Origin successfully landed a rocket back to Earth including its space capsule, a month ahead of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.

Bezos said that Wednesday's test involved an explosion of sorts which is part of a planned and forced escape after liftoff within 45 seconds at 16,000 feet. The separation system detached the crew capsule from the booster rocket after ignition of the escape motor, Bezos revealed.


This escape motor is located underneath the New Shepard capsule, where an engine burned for two seconds, blasting the vehicle from the rocket at a distance of hundreds of feet. The capsule then launched three parachutes in the direction of its flight trajectory. The parachutes opened shortly as the capsule conducted a soft landing.

The New Shepard rocket has been launched, flown and landed four times. As 70,000 pounds of thrust emitted from the capsule's escape motor during the test, the capsule and rocket wobble a bit, but the booster successfully conducted a soft landing on all its legs, some two miles north of the launch site.

Bezos said that the since booster rocket survived this successful, fifth flight, it will now be retired and placed in a museum.
