VSCO recently commissioned the work of Brea Souders documenting all-time favorite American foods found in diners and sold by street vendors. By using a radiometric thermal camera to capture her images, Souders discovered that all matter with a temperature greater than absolute zero emanates electromagnetic waves - even Pizza.

The radiometric thermal camera used by Souders is a special camera that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to sense infrared radiation. She documented images of radiating hotdogs, French fries, ice cream, and a breakfast plate. The photographs showed that as the temperature of an object rises, the amount of radiation it emits also increases. Different levels of heat are displayed in various colors making the images appear like pop art.

Unlike an ordinary camera [as well as the human eye], the radiometric thermal camera can detect infrared spectrums and deliver a conception of how heat is distributed. It assigns a corresponding color to each specific temperature and renders crisp infrared images. According to VSCO, the camera applies a technique called thermography. Usually, a quality camera records specific temperature for each image, with an estimated accuracy of plus or minus 2 degrees Celsius.

VSCO suggests that using radiometric thermal cameras have important advantages. It can function in complete darkness which means that it can be useful during both day and night. In fact, companies that require surveillance and even the military prefer using this kind of camera. It is also used by firefighters to trace people who are concealed by smoke, and by those in the medical field to detect sickness.
