Google may be looking to phase-out Google Now. The latest beta version of Google's Android search app replaces Now on Tap with "Screen search," while Google Now is referred to as "Feed." It is likely that Google is quietly making way for its upcoming Google Assistant feature. Version 6.5.26 of the beta Google Search app was rolled out recently.

According to Android Police, both Google Assistant and Google Now are designed to provide predictive and contextual information. However, Assistant has various other features, giving it an edge over Google Now, which was released over four years ago. However, several of its features including Now on Tap were released later. Now on Tap was announced during Google I/O 2015. The feature failed to make an impact.

The Verge reported that the move is likely to emphasize Google as a brand. The company is expected to launch its new Pixel phones during a special event scheduled for October 4 in San Francisco. It is highly likely that Google may want to sort out the Google Now and Google Assistant issue by then. Google is expected to launch a new version of its Chromecast during the event. The company may reveal its DayDream VR gadget as well.

The new Assistant will be able to make use of everyday language. It will be embedded in several products to let users enjoy the features of Internet of Things. The service will compete directly with Apple's Siri and Amazon's Echo.
