Facebook has augmented its Messenger chat experience with the addition of live videos. The social network's Messenger platform already offers video calling function. However, the latest offering is more about providing quick visuals to supplement text chats.

The new update lets users add a live video to the corner of their phone's screen. The feature is line with Facebook's push towards videos. The feature can be activated by tapping the video icon, located on the top right corner of the Messenger. This activates the camera of the user's phone and lets them capture the videos.

The new feature is user-friendly as it starts in 'Mute' mode. Users can turn on the audio manually by tapping the speaker icon. The video window floats over the chat screen in top right-hand corner and lets users carry on their chat conversation. The function is designed to enhance chat conversation and not replace it.

According to PC Mag, the video stream is currently unidirectional. Users can only add their video when their chat partner has finished their video. The new feature is compatible with both the rear and front cameras.

In its blog post, Facebook claimed that the new feature is a "reflection of the ubiquity of video." It also stated that videos are "a regular part of everyday life." The networking site also features Live Video function. Instant videos are gaining traction with the advent of various apps such as Twitter's Periscope and Snapchat.

The latest version of Messenger for Android and iOS comes equipped with the instant video feature.
