Facebook finally decided that it's time to remove descriptions from Trending Topics after being criticized for having an anti-conservative bias.

"Facebook Trending," which was launched in 2014, shows users a topic followed by a description written by humans. But after being heavily criticized for being biased, the company decided to take out the human factor and leave the selection of its trending stories to pure algorithm. Facebook allegedly laid off its entire Trending team.

The company reportedly re-assigned the workers as engineers tasked with checking if the topics and articles generated by the algorithm are newsworthy or not.  Contractors, who have been with the company for less than a year, were provided with severance equal to their pay throughout September plus an additional two weeks.

Facebook's decision to dismiss its Trending team is the company's response to an article published by Gizmodo in May. The report claimed that Facebook's trending team suppress conservative news. The report further stated that the company instructed them to artificially inject selected stories into the trending news, even if they are not newsworthy.

The accusations left an impression that Facebook's news section reflects the biases of its workers, and suggests that editorial values are unethical. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded to the article saying that "We take this report very seriously and are conducting a full investigation to ensure our teams upheld the integrity of this product."

After conducting a thorough investigation, the company said that it found no evidence that the report was true, nor the accusation regarding the company's political bias.

Now that the company has removed the human factor, Facebook is relying on pure algorithm to select trending topics. It may have eradicated bias, but according to The Guardian, the move is a disaster as it allowed a false story to start trending.

The site pushed an article entitled: "BREAKING: Fox News Exposes Traitor Megyn Kelly, Kicks her out for Backing Hillary." However, Kelly is still employed by Fox News and has not endorsed Clinton. Other trending items chosen by the algorithm included Twitter hashtags of #McChicken, following the news of a man masturbating with a McChicken Sandwich.
