Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were rumored to include a Smart Connector, but the Japanese website Mac Otakara has suggested the port will not be included in the next series of iPhones. Smart Connector first appeared on the iPad Pro and transfers data/power between a device and accessories such as the Smart Keyboard. It was believed the Lightning port would be used on Apple smartphones for functions such as wireless charging or battery cases.

The Smart Connector ends the need for third-party accessories to require batteries or charging. They can be used right after they are plugged in. This could result in various types of accessories including mini keyboards, wireless headphones, and smart cases, according to Forbes.

In March an iPhone image posted on a Chinese website suggested the iPhone 7 series models would include the Smart Connector, according to Mac Rumors. The uploaded photo shows three dots on the back of the phone. However, it is unclear if the photo was a real iPhone 7 device, design mockup, or  fake device.

Another design drawing by Mac Fan showing a Smart Connector also surfaced. However, the drawings were mostly based on iPhone 7 rumors.

Mac Otakara suggests Apple considered adding the Smart Connector to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. However, due to the weak original rumor it is possible the tech giant never planned to add the port to the handsets.

In fact, paradoxical rumors about the iPhone 7 are still floating around so the final design and features of the device are still unclear.

iPhone 7 rumors have included several issues. They include the handset's thickness, waterproofing, headphone jack, protruding camera, and stereo speakers. However, the picture will probably clear up in the next months before the iPhone 7's likely fall release.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said new plans for the iPhone 7 will make consumers want to upgrade their smartphone. He told CNBC that after the handset is released people will ask themselves how they ever lived without the phone.

Meanwhile, KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo claims an iPhone 8 with an all-glass form factor and OLED display will launch next year. It would be in place of an iPhone 7s.
