If the LG G6 was a letdown in terms of processing power, LG is making sure that it will be a better story for the LG G7 2018 release date. The Korean device maker is reportedly developing the next-generation flagship chip with Qualcomm if only to ensure that the processor will be the G7 main engine.

The latest reports from South Korea indicated that Qualcomm has commenced the development phase of the SD 845, which according to The Investor "is expected to be 30 percent more powerful than the latest 835," thanks to the use of 7-nanometer manufacturing process. The report added that Qualcomm has tapped LG as a partner for the project.

It's unclear, however, if the Qualcomm-LG deal is exclusive as 9to5Google said in a related report that Samsung was supposed to be Qualcomm's partner on developing and mass manufacturing the SD 845. In any case, it's not unlikely that the next-generation chip will both involve the two Korean device makers as Qualcomm both worked with the companies in the past.

When the Galaxy S7 was rolled out in early 2016, Qualcomm's SD 820 powered the device and the same chip was found in the LG G5.

So it's a safe bet that the same thing will happen next year - the Galaxy S9 will be unboxed boasting of the 7-nanometer chip as well as the LG G6.

But the question is, which Korean flagship maker will get the SD 845 first? This year, Samsung got the honor but with the report of Qualcomm collaborating with both LG and Samsung, it will remain a question mark for some time.

The Investor said LG making sure that its sequel to the LG G6 is fired up by SD 845 will mean that the device maker is retraining its focus "from stability to innovation in product development to outpace its rivals." And it makes sense as LG is still seen as behind to rival Samsung when it comes to mobile flagship devices.

It is expected too that aside from higher computing power and increased efficiency that SD 845 will deliver, the chip will be instrumental in making AI and VR as standard features for 2018 flagship smartphones.

LG has yet to details its release date plans for the LG G7 but going by the rollout timing of the LG G6 this year, it's highly likely that the G7 will get unpacked as early as March 2018.
