Google is testing a new home phone service for Google Fiber subscribers that will provide them with one phone number for all devices they use. It would also offer various Google Voice services including call screening, voicemails sent as emails to their inboxes, and spam filtering.

Google Fiber Phone is now just available for people who have been invited to participate in the program. That includes those who opted in for the beta testing of the Fiber Trusted Tester program, according to PC Mag.

Here is how it works. Google is sending invitation letters to Google Fiber customers asking if they want to participate in the home phone service's testing, and will give them one week to reply. If Google accepts the customer to participate in the program, it will send out a technician to set up a piece of equipment for the new service.

Google Fiber customers in the Trusted Tester group will be asked to supply good or bad feedback. That will help the company to improve the program before a it is rolled out for all customers.

The tech titan has also asked the program participants to keep the beta testing top-secret. That is because Google Fiber Phone is not available to the public yet.

The Washington Post has pointed out that Google Fiber's home phone service would make it a "triple-play provider." In other words it would provide voice, data, and TV service.

That would also help Google to compete better with larger rivals such as Comcast. Last year Comcast made a Facebook post noting that Google Fiber customers in Kansas City experienced a loss of service during a game of the World Series, according to Time.

However, the move backfired. It resulted in Google Fiber customers arguing their telecom was still better than Comcast due to the faster Internet speeds and lower bills.

Comcast then deleted the thread. Meanwhile, Google Fiber has plans to expand its services to several major United States cities.

Google Fiber Phone could also allow it to bundle its Project Fi service. The low-cost mobile service works on Sprint's and T-Mobile's wireless networks.

Google Fiber was launched in 2010. As of October 2015 the broadband Internet and cable television service had an estimated 120,000 customers.
