Following the revival of Nintendo's NES and Nokia's 3310, another '90s technology is set for a big comeback - the classic Tamagotchi. 

Bandai has relaunched the classic Tamagotchi toy in near-original form to mark its 20th anniversary. It was first launched in Japan in November 2016 and May 1997 in various other countries.

The toy in egg form is back to the simple black-and-white display and the six initial characters with its size reduced to half the original being the only remarkable change.

Tamagotchi is an electronic pocket pet that needs to be constantly fed, kept clean, provided with water and assured of good sleep. It grows virtually if cared for properly. 

According to The Sun, the toy has been responsible to many dinner arguments as pre-teens solemnly fumbled with its buttons while tea was being dished out. In fact, some schools implemented a ban against it as the beeping it creates when it calls for attention interrupts classes.

The interest in this game, however, has continued 20 years after it was originally introduced.

Hollywood celeb Katy Perry, for instance, was spotted with a Tamagotchi toy during last year's Met Gala.

According to The Sun, Bandai Japan has been releasing new Tamagotchi models since its launch 11 years ago, but this is the first time it has re-created the original.

There's a catch though. You would need to travel miles away to Japan to grab one Tamagotchi. The toy is only available in Japan for about $18. You may also buy from Amazon with the equivalent price.

Next Shark estimates that one original Tamagotchi now costs more than five times its original price on Amazon. If it was valued around $18 back in 1997, the prized and limited memorabilia can go for as much as $130 online, it said.
