Twitter is developing a new feature that will allow users to make tweets that are longer than the current 140-character limit, which it plans to launch around the end of Q1 of this year. Several sources report that the new limit will be 10,000 characters, which is the company's limit for Direct Messages.

Re/code first reported the character limit boost last September. The social network has not announced any official launch dates, and the final character limit could be increased or decreased before the product is rolled out.

Twitter is working on a version that still shows 140 characters. However, it also informs users that certain content is invisible, which can be viewed by clicking on the tweet to expand it, according to Re/code.

However, one key factor is the amount of space that longer tweets and bigger pictures take up. This tends to result in Twitter users making and viewing fewer tweets.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been searching for ways to augment the company's revenue, and has launched several product updates.  However, it is unclear if providing bigger character limits is the best solution.

In any case, the microblogging service's move shows that it is willing tweak one of its key product features. In fact, the 140 character limit has existed since the company's founding in 2006.

Some big issues about an expanded character limit still exist. They include how many users can be included in one tweet.

Twitter users have long used third-party tools such as TwitLonger to make lengthier tweets, according to CBS News. Other Twitter fans have posted screenshots of text.
