Scientists have discovered dinosaur footprints in Northeast China's Jilin Province, according to a joint statement revealed by researches from China, South Korea, and the US.

The dinosaur tracks were reportedly found on a rural mountain road in Longjing in the Korean Autonomous Prefecture of Yanbian, Jilin Province. The footprints were first discovered in 2015 but was only confirmed this week, News Patrolling noted.

"The tracks include footprints of hadrosaurs that are 55 centimeters long. The trackmaker's body could have reached seven meters long," Xing Lida, China University of Geosciences' associate professor, said.

Several other tracks of carnivorous dinosaurs, ranging between 21 and 43 centimeters, were also found. "Some 100 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period, this area might have been a shallow lake, where a large number of dinosaurs played and searched for food. I expect to find more track fossils of dinosaurs here," Xing said, adding that the discovery will help point the region's landscape during the Cretaceous period.

Xing also said that the fossil site was first unearthed by Japanese scientists about two decades ago. But some of the tracks were already not found in the research trips carried out in 2015, Global Times reported. They believe that the tracks were dug up by burglars.

"Even though the tracks are found in remote regions, we suggest local governments protect these tracks by moving them to museums."

Last year, one of the largest ever dinosaur footprints was also uncovered during a joint expedition of Japanese and Mongolian researchers in the Gobi desert.

The print, which measured 106cm long and 77 cm wide, is believed to belong to a titanosaur, which is a giant, long-necked herbivore. Researchers estimate that the footprint, which was discovered in August in a geologic layer was formed from 70 million to 90 million years ago.
