ExtraTorrent.cc Shut Down by Domain Registrar but Torrent Site Remains Accessible via Extra.to Mirror

ExtraTorrent, currently the second largest torrenting site next to The Pirate Bay, is down or at least its main domain Extratorrent.cc. However, the file-sharing site remains fully operational site and users can still access its services through the mirror site Extra.to, a new report said.

Following the recent blocking of TPB by Swedish ISPs and imminent extradition to the United States of Kickass Torrents owner Artem Vaulin, torrent operators appears to be losing another ground on their ongoing war with copyright holders. The main ExtraTorrent.cc domain has been disconnected, TorrentFreak said, adding that the URL is now unreachable.

The ET domain shut down was caused by the action of the site's registrar identified in the report as Internet BS. The outfit refused to issue comments on the matter but according to TorrentFreak, the action may have been prompted by complaints from rights holders.

With millions of daily visitors, ExtraTorrent has become among the top torrent destinations in the world and is now on the radar of authorities and rights holders that are constantly clamping down on online piracy activities.

The same report indicated that Internet BS likely pulled the plug on ExtraTorrent for fear of legal problems to arise soon. It has been standard practice by digital content producers and authorities to put pressures on actors, domain registrars including, they deemed as direct participants to incidents of copyright infringement.

But the latest action did not exactly push ExtraTorrent out of action. TorrentFreak said site operators have been maintaining backup sites for such situations and at present ET users head off to Extra.to to continue getting their torrent fix.

And it's only a matter of time before ET operators will replace Extratorrent.cc as the main domain, in the same way that The Pirate Bay has been jumping from one domain to another in order to elude the relentless crackdowns being waged by anti-piracy groups.

"The site's (ExtraTorrent) operator hasn't yet responded to our request for comment, but it's likely that the site will pick an official new domain in the near future," TorrentFreak reported.
