The biggest selling point of the Nokia 3310 2017 edition is its retro appeal and units are likely to fly off the shelves, like the NES Mini before it, when the device becomes available. But it turns out the reimagined classic phone will not launch in America anytime soon.

Yes, the 3310 is mostly a dumb phone and lacks the features standard to flagship smartphones these days - no touchscreen, powerful camera and other modern device functionalities. But it's safe to say, judging from the interest generated by the re-introduced device, the Nokia 3310 will sell like hotcakes and there likely will be shortage of supply.

But not for U.S.-based consumers, CNET reported. While the plan by HMD Global is to distribute all the new Nokia phone models, the 3310 including, worldwide the device maker will meet a major stumbling block in the U.S. market. The Nokia 3310 technology is not supported by network service providers operating in America.

Or more appropriately, most U.S. telcos have long retired the network infrastructure that is compatible with the Nokia 3310 connectivity features.

HMD said the device will connect using 2G cellular signal on 900MHz frequency. CNET said most U.S. carriers don't use the frequency anymore. For the 3310 to work in AT&T and other major telcos, the device needs to use any of two - 850MHz and 1900MHz.

The report said, Nokia will want to sell the 2017 3310 to U.S. buyers but it is unlikely to happen this 2017. "It's that the U.S. takes a little bit longer to ramp up," the device maker told CNET.

Also, HMD made clear that all Nokia handsets will hit the U.S. market at some point, adding "it's definitely on our radar ... we want to go into the US because we want to have a global launch."

As for the company's other offerings - the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 that run on near Pure Android, the chance is higher that the devices will reach the U.S. shores this 2017 due to their more advanced handset feature and functionalities.
