People cough at least once a day, that's just normal. But when dry or wet cough occurs for a long period of time it may indicate a serious illness.

Get Science team made a video to show how the seven parts of the body; vocal cords, epiglottis, windpipe, chest muscles, abdominal muscles, lungs, and diaphragm works together to make ticklish sensation in the throat (a cough), they take and compress the air and then exhale it again with the speed of 500mph.

A cough is one of the ways to eliminate the foreign materials from chest and throat. A cough that occurs within 24 hours is completely normal. But if it took a bit little longer, it may be a sign that you should see a doctor. If it still there until two weeks and produces a "barking" cough sound, this may already be significant. The common types of cough include a dry and wet cough.

Dry Cough

There is no mucus or has only a small amount of mucus in a dry cough and it is accompanied by throat irritation. According to WebMD, this reaction is due to environmental irritation like smoking, inhaling foreign materials that do not settle in the throat, or just simply allergic reaction.

But a dry cough can also be a detection of asthma or side effects brought by certain medications. Chronic dry cough is a warning sign of gastric reflux.

Wet Cough

More mucus is being produced in wet cough. Although it may be an indication of allergic reaction, it can also indicate a serious condition like respiratory infection or heart conditions.

If a wet cough still exists for several weeks with bloody sputum, this may be an early detection of lung cancer. Pneumonia, on the other hand, occurs when the color of the mucus in wet cough is yellow or green. In addition, a chronic wet cough that usually occurs during the morning is an indication of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
