Sony's PlayStation VR launched on Oct. 2016, and reports reveal that the virtual reality headset is doing good regarding sales.

Sony divulges their details of its success to The New York Times (NYT) in an interview. It was revealed that there were doubts as to how the mass market would react to virtual reality.

Global Chief Executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment Andrew House even told the company to lower the number of produced VR headsets.

"It's the classic case in any organization - the guys who are on the front end in sales are getting very excited, very hyped up," House stated. "You have to temper that with other voices inside the company, myself among them, saying let's just be a little bit careful."

Four months later, it turned out that House was just very cautious as Sony's virtual reality headset has been seen to be scarce in many establishments, especially when looking at Japan. It was also revealed in the interview that consumers had already purchased 915,000 units of the headset as of Feb. 19, which is about four months since the original release date of the device.

House told NYT that the supply for PlayStation VR headsets would improve by April of this year. Come fall 2017; it is expected that Sony will be selling the gaming peripheral in Latin America.

The success of PlayStation VR's sales points to a positive sign for the virtual reality sector. It would also seem that Sony establishes itself to become the current leader in the premium side of the VR market.

In other news, NYT has also posted about a more sober tone in the virtual reality sector as sales of other headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, had seen better days. It has been reported that sticker shock, and perhaps nausea, are hampering sales for the virtual reality device.
