The upcoming 720S model supercar from McLaren might be the biggest competitor to the Tesla P100D.

In three weeks' time, sports car enthusiasts will finally have a glimpse of what the highly-anticipated upgrade to the McLaren 650S has to offer. Accordingly, the performance of Tesla's latest car model may become outdated with the arrival of 720s, particularly in terms of how fast it can actually run.

On Wednesday, the British conglomerate revealed that apart from the expected ultra light weight of the McLaren 720S, customers will also enjoy some other "significant boost" to it. It can be recalled that earlier this year, the company announced that the upcoming model will boast of a carbon fiber tub called Monocage II to make it extra lighter than its predecessor.

In terms of the engine that will power it, the M840T will be utilized. This is a upgrade to the current M838T engine.

"The new 4.0-litre M840T is an outstanding engine powering an exceptional supercar capable of covering a standing quarter mile in 10.3 seconds," McLaren Super Series Vehicle Line Director Haydn Baker said about the new McLaren 720S. "Power, torque and throttle response are all significantly enhanced compared to the first-generation Super Series, yet with fuel efficiency and emissions also notably improved."

While the Tesla P100D is "capable of dispatching the drag strip in merely 10.8 seconds," the 720S can already hit a speed of 124mph or 200km/h in just a matter of 7.8 seconds," Ars Technica UK reported.

Meanwhile, Motor Trend reported that based on McLaren's explanation, the new engine capacity would leave no room for turbo lag. This means that the driver would have a "quicker throttle response."
