Google App 'Alpha' Version: Accidental Roll out Enables Google Assistant on few non-Pixel Phones

The Alpha version of the Google App (version 6.13) allows the users to use the artificial intelligence feature Google Assistant on a few non-Pixel smartphones with flash required.

It seems that the Google Assistant feature might not be restricted only to Pixel phones anymore. Reports suggest that the new Alpha version of the Google App (version 6.13) is enabling it on few of the non-Pixel phones. However, this version is not completely stable, and not everyone who loads it will receive the AI feature.

The more conversational version of the Google Now (version 6.13) is currently offered on the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL smartphones, which were the first two devices to feature Google Assistant. It was announced by Google in fall last year.

This accidental roll out of the Google App Alpha version (version 6.13) has brought the AI feature Google Assistant early to handsets such as the Nexus 6P, Alcatel Idol 4, and Samsung Galaxy Note 5. A message will display saying "New! You just got the Google Assistant." The setup process for voice training begins there.

To test the installed Alpha version of the Google App (version 6.13), long press the home button, similar to how Google Now on Tap is activated. If the device has the access to Google Assistant, then at this point, a pop-up will appear for the AI feature. If not, switching back to the old version that the device was previously running is probably recommended.

The new Alpha version of the Google App (version 6.13) supports payments and delivery information for use with Google Assistant. It also includes a recent search page and a lite mode as well. However, both of these options can be disabled from the Account Settings.

The accidental roll out of the Google App Alpha version (version 6.13) has allowed users to also discover a new Google feature called "Recent" that will show recently requested search topics. A new weather card also appears to be in the process of getting tested.

There is no confirmation from Google if the company will go ahead and enable the Google Assistant for non-Pixel smartphones. It is pretty much the only exclusive feature on the software that the Pixel owners are getting.
