According to a new research on different diets, the Mediterranean diet can help to reduce the risks of osteoporosis and also brings many bone-protective benefits.  While millions across the world are taking supplements to prevent bone loss, the research shows that eating food rich in anti-inflammatory quality could help to keep osteoporosis at bay.

The research examined the risk of fracture, bone density along with a diet of over 90000 postmenopausal women aged between 50 and 79  according to Express. This data was analyzed and evaluated across four diet indexes. The researchers discovered that women who followed Mediterranean diet had a 20 percent lower risk of hip fractures, which is the lowest percentage of risk compared with other three diet types. The study also suggests that any high-quality diet can reduce the risks of osteoporosis or fracture. Bone density decreases with age, but certain conditions and choices like smoking and drinking could increase the risks of bone fracture and osteoporosis.

The plant-based diet also is an effective solution for reducing heart disease as well as for diabetes.The six-year-long study found that women who consumed most anti-inflammatory foods lost less bone density compared to those who ate the least.

According to Rebecca Jackson, Professor of the US Women's Health Initiative, who is also a co-author of the research, by focussing at the full diet rather than the individual components of the diet, the data provides the much-needed foundation for understanding how the different components in the diet interact to provide benefit.

According to iTech Post, the US Dietary Guidelines Committee also recommends following the Mediterranean diet or similar dietary patterns. The details of this research were published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
