North Korea has reportedly invented a hangover-free alcoholic drink made of ginseng and glutinous (sticky) rice. It has been described in the media as a smooth beverage that causes no hangover and won a Medal of Quality in December 2015.

Koryo Liquor is the name of the alcoholic drink that is reportedly 30 to 40 percent alcohol. The new booze was reported by the government-run The Pyongyang Times, according to Gizmodo.

It is made from 6-year-old native "insam" ginseng and is grown by using an organic farming method. Pyongyang Times claims that the alcoholic beverage includes a "national flavor."

In addition, the newspaper states the spirit of Koryo Liquor is enjoyed by experts and lovers. Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory has reportedly been developing the hangover-free drink for years.

Kaesong Koryo insam is a natural herb added to the alcoholic beverage. The North Korean newspaper reports that replacing sugar with burned sticky rice removed the ginseng's bitterness and therefore prevents hangovers.

Past studies have shown that ginseng seems to have anti-hangover properties. A 2014 study revealed that a red ginseng drink reduced the symptoms of a hangover better than water due to how the root affected alcohol metabolism.

However, in the past North Korea's top scientists have made preposterous claims about the health benefits of ginseng. It is the key ingredient in a Kumdang-2 shot that they claim can cure several illnesses including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Chosong Exchange's Andray Abrahamian visits North Korea on business trips. He told the United Kingdom-based website that insam liquors are average, but not very delicious, according to BBC.

Abrahamian noted that North Korea produces some high-quality alcoholic drinks. However, he does not believe any county brews hangover-free liquor.

Hangovers can include various symptoms including a bad headache, dry throat, and upset stomach. They cost nations billions of dollars per year due to work absences.

Alcohol contains toxins that cause a human body to become sick. However, when a person cannot produce enough enzymes to battle the poisons the result is a hangover.

Hundreds of hangover cures exist. They include eating big meals before consuming alcohol, and drinking water before going to sleep.
