The upcoming Resident Evil 7 game would feature a major change by utilizing the first-person perspective.

Resident Evil has made significant changes to its survival-horror formula over the years. The iconic horror series started out using the static camera approach before eventually evolving into an over-the-shoulder third-person camera.

In the latest entry of the series, the developers have opted to make the game more personal by using a first-person perspective. The decision has been met with mixed reactions from longtime Resident Evil fans.

Breathing new life into the horror survival series

In an interview with Game Spot, the game developers explained why the new first-person take on the series was necessary. Resident Evil 7 producer Jun Takeuchi said he wants players to directly feel a sense of fear.

Takeuchi added that he wants players to be engrossed in the game's atmosphere and for them to feel that their character is "very much in danger." For that level of immersion, the developer decided to take a first-person approach.

While this approach might not feel like the usual Resident Evil title, Takeuchi explained that the series remains true to its survival-horror roots. Despite giving the series a little twist in terms of camera perspective, the focal point is the same.

Director Koshi Nakanishi pointed out that instead of focusing on multiplayer or other elements, the developer opted to refine and sharpen the element that the series is known for, which is fear.

Nakanishi explained this doesn't mean that the developer is crossing-off multiplayer from the series completely.

Fear and difficulty go together

Meanwhile, there are reports that Resident Evil 7 is going to be the hardest game in the franchise. Enemies are going to be harder to dispatch this time around, Gaming Bolt reported.

The developers explained that the bump in difficulty is "definitely intentional." They explained that if players can get rid of enemies easily, they would not feel tension and anxiety.

Resident Evil 7 will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC starting on January 24, 2017.
