Apple's iPhone 8 scheduled to be launched this year and many expected major changes in the physical design of the smartphone. There are rumors that Apple would go for a glass sandwich design similar to Samsung's latest flagship devices.

The iPhone 8 will come with a metal unibody construction, but will allegedly feature a glass design on the back and front. The so-called glass sandwich will sport a metal frame in-between two high-grade glass materials.

Samsung was able to successfully create flagship phones with a similar design concept, cutting costs but adding on the premium look and feel of the device.

It is still unclear what kind of materials Apple will use to manufacture its next flagship phone. However, as the trend goes, the metal frame is expected to be made from high-grade stainless steel, similar to the metal frame used for the iPhone 4. According to sources, two companies who produced the frame for the iPhone 4 will also be making the frames for the iPhone 8 as well.

The two companies, namely Jabil and Foxconn, are expected to use stainless steel to forge the chassis of the iPhone 8. The forging process cost is reportedly about 30-50 percent cheaper and is more stable.

The reduced cost of making the chassis will balance out the purchase expense of the alleged AMOLED displays, which Apple plans to use for the next iPhone. AMOLED screens are way expensive compared to the current displays used in the iPhone 7 and its predecessors.
