Additional Games Come to Nintendo’s NES Classic Thanks to Hacking

One of the biggest technological gizmos of 2016 was the NES Classic from Nintendo, and it has sold in large quantities. However, it has been a big disappointment for many as there is no way to add more games apart from the thirty included games. This has pushed some gamers to resort to hacking to add more gaming titles.

According to Techplz, over the past week, two different hackers (one believed to be from Russia and one from Japan) have broken through the console to play additional games apart from what is available on the roster. The Japanese hacker hacked the Japanese Famicom version of NES Classic and posted instructions on Reddit of how he accomplished the feat. His instructions, however, does not indicate whether the hack would work on units from North America.

According to the hacker, the exploit needs the console to be connected to a computer via a USB cable and booting it in "FEL" mode. After booting, the information from the NES Classic needs to be copied to a computer, where it can be modified using tools.  Once NES ROM files are copied from the computer to the NES Classic console, additional games can be installed on it.

The Russian hacker who goes by the name madmonkey provided information on the tool needed to modify the ROMs to play games on the hacked console. His technique has no actual alterations to the mechanical or electronic aspects of the console.

These hacks have given gamers a way to add some unofficial games to the console, according to Kotaku.

Hopefully, Nintendo may release another box with new and bigger games this year in addition to the current 30 games.
