Sweat is not the cause of body odor, instead it is caused by the microorganisms that are present in the skin. With advancements in science, a researcher has found that transplanting armpit bacteria may help in solving stinking armpit.

Christ Callewaert of the Ghent University has revealed that the type of fabric used in clothes affects the fetor caused by microbes. According to him, a polyester shirt will have worse smell compared to cotton. He regards body odor as an acute problem for some individuals.

Callewaert's latest approach to reducing body odor involves transplanting bacteria to the armpits of an individual. He used a twin as his subjects. The sibling with body odor was subjected to a bacterial transplant. The principle behind this procedure is simply introducing beneficial and good bacterial and letting them outgrow the odor-causing ones.

However, 18 similar procedures were not as fortunate as the twins. However, scientist remains positive that his program can be improved before the study is published next months.

Body odor can be a serious issue for most people. Callewaert said that people suffering from this have lost their partners, friends, and confidence.

"It really impacts their life," he said. "It's such a taboo. People just think, 'Why don't you use deodorant?' They actually wash themselves more than the average people and change their clothes more often."

This is not the first time bacteria has been used to address body odor, in fact, several markets have started selling deodorants with good bacteria. For instance, MotherDirt markets body sprays with bacteria which it claims can reestablish a healthy group of microbes that can devour their bad counterparts.

Callewaert hopes that the success of armpit bacteria transplant can help in ending the embarrassing situation linked to body odor.
