A lot of thought goes into the process of choosing smartphones. Points that are considered include the specs of the device such as how much RAM it has. However, there is one item that seems to be forgotten: the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which is the measure of a gadget's radiation emission.

Of course, when we hear radiation, we almost immediately jump to the point that it is dangerous, and it is. That is why it is regulated and measured in many popular smartphone brands like Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and Asus. French tech website PhonAndroid took it upon themselves to measure the SAR of ten of the best selling phones in the world right now.

The list of high-end phones on the list includes the newly released iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung S7 and S7 Edge, Asus ZenFone 3, the Huawei P8, and Huawei Honor 8. The results were surprising as the Samsung devices had lower SAR values with the S7 Edge leading the way with the lowest value of 0.26W/kg.  The Asus ZenFone 3 came in second at 0.278W/kg, and the Samsung Galaxy A5 came in third with 0.29W/kg.

On the other side, both Huawei devices ranked as the ones with the highest SAR value of 1.5W/kg for the Honor 8 and 1.43W/kg for the P8. Apple did not fare well during the testing as the iPhone 7 clocked in at 1.3W/kg and the iPhone 7 Plus got a SAR value of 1/24W/kg. The values are high and are close to the limit that the Federal Communications Commission at 1.6W/kg.

With the Samsung devices garnering low values of SAR, this could help boost the company's image after the Note 7 disaster. The S7 and the S7 Edge could be the silver lining for the Korean phone maker.
