The Foundation Framework, a popular framework known for a user interface with user-friendly, responsive grids, CSS and HTML components, full templates, and kicker code snippets for capping projects, has celebrated its 5th anniversary this year and the users are in turn celebrating what makes this open source project stand out.

Zurb's Foundation, in many ways, has changed the world of web development and design. Although Foundation started out as an internal ZURB style guide, its usability helped it evolve into the framework that it is today, which is used by thousands of brands and millions of users.

Responsiveness is one of the great traits that make Foundation stand out, especially since it was the first open-source framework to use the responsive design and method of building. During the years when most companies were coding fixed pixel widths, Foundation came out and made it simpler for designers and developers to embrace the importance of responsive design. By doing so, Foundation made a testament and earned the title of being a trailblazer.

Foundation's use of Semantic markup helped balance things for developers. As the emergence of HTML5 moved the general aesthetics of the web toward semantic markup, it permitted consistency between the visual, text content, and identifiable items for web crawlers. Adoption of this philosophy and methodology was initially slow, but Foundation has helped hike the numbers up.

Currently, the mobile platform has overtaken the desktop in terms of the numbers of users and Foundation was again one of the trailblazers for this method of design. In fact, they were leading the pack as Foundation started popularizing mobile-first designs right before mobile took over, this was during the time that developers and designers primarily built for desktop screens. The mobile-first approach was sorely needed, as this approach gave bad user experiences on smaller devices.

In the five years of its existence, Foundation has become a favorite tool and framework of choice for some of the best designers, developers, and even businesses and brands. Thanks mainly to Foundation's role as a trailblazer and moving the web toward the direction that it is taking now, along with Zurb's philosophy that that the web should be for everyone.
