China has discredited US President-elect Donald Trump's accusation that global warming is a Chinese hoax created to harm US competitiveness.

The vice foreign minister of China, Liu Zhenmin, noted that Trump cannot accuse China of inventing global warming as a hoax to damage US competitiveness because his Republican predecessors are the ones who started global warming negotiations back in the 1980s. According to Bloomberg, Liu questioned Trump's accusations in front of the 200 officials who attended a conference in Marrakech, Morocco.

State representatives China and several small island nations gathered at the conference awaiting Trump's decision on whether or not the US would give its support to the 2015 Paris agreement. The US president-elect has previously stated that he would bail from the deal. Trump's advisers are allegedly considering ways to bypass the procedures for leaving the agreement.

China has been urging Trump to reconsider his stance on the issue of climate change, considering that the US is the second largest producer of greenhouse gasses. The Verge reported that many scientists are worried and have been anxious about what Trump's presidency could mean for the future of the country.

Despite Trump's accusations, China has said that it would continue fighting against climate change regardless of the circumstance. However, Liu said that because the US is a global power, its support is essential. He said he could only hope that the country will go for the wiser decision.
