Earlier this year, reports emerged that large, hero-sized cinemagraphs are set to be the top trend in homepages of websites. Cinemagraphs were initially designed for hero pages and showcase content.

Only a few websites though are using cinemagraphs currently. It has a mesmerizing effect on most web users especially since it brings a conundrum, not being categorized as a still image nor a video.

One effective way of attracting attention to a website, in particular, has always been videos in hero pages. However, a large hero page with a video is file heave, even if it a very short video. The adverse effect would be the slow loading of the web page. But by using a cinemagraph, in the place of a video, data consumption can be minimized and avoid compromising on loading time, while at the same time satisfying the visual motion requirement.

In making or designing a cinemagraph, it can be automatically stated that the theme comes with the website niche. But in setting the scene, one must remember to keep it subtle, as the point of using this technology, as opposed to a video is minimalism. It is also helpful to ensure that the overall composition is not brightly colored or too busy with article details, especially if headline text and CTA, or call to action buttons are to overlay it.

In the effort to minimalize the total file, the motion files must be loop capable so it can seamlessly repeat itself. To achieve this, the first position of the image detail must be as close as possible to the last one. Also, make sure to keep it anchored, as it is a requirement for the overall scene to be very still for the movement to show proper contrast.

A cinemagraph can upgrade a website a few notches and impact its success. If properly combined with a great, attention-grabbing headline and a compelling call to action, expect conversion rates to go up.
