eBay Experiments With Visual Search Engine

eBay, one of the main names in e-commerce sites, has launched a new site named eBay Collective that caters specifically to furniture and its complementary products for homes.

The site was created for affluent buyers as it features antiques, fine art, contemporary art fixtures and other unique items. But what makes it stand out is the new visual search engine called Corrigon.

The Corrigon technology was purchased by eBay earlier this year for almost $30 million. Corrigon is not exactly new as it has been used by other sites since 2006. However, eBay Collective was able to maximize its potential, and the result is a stunning user experience.

Corrigon is used in eBay Collectives' "Shop the Room" feature, which allows you to highlight images of a fully designed area of a selected home. Corrigon searches and filters through eBay's inventory to find items that are similar, if not exact, with the image indicated.

Corrigon's search technology was originally developed with the main aim of helping users select, identify, and perform an external search for an object within an image. eBay developers customized new steps into the process to allow users to match their selection with additional images or links to other items within a database.

The aesthetics of the new site is highly rich in imaging, specifically designed to showcase products and cater to the senses of shopping users trying to make buying decisions. eBay Collective is eBay's latest attempt to upgrade its service for its user base of active shoppers, which totals approximately 164 million.
