Twitter posted a new record during the United States Election Day. With Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton edging each other out to be the next president, Twitter came on top by toppling its record. By 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Twitter had more than 35 million election-related tweets, toppling its record of 31 million tweets during the 2012 election.

Despite Twitter's stagnant growth over several quarters, the social networking platform's 317 million user base went on to share a new record-breaking number of tweets related to the U.S. Presidential Election. With Twitter's quick and easy sharing platform, combined with entertaining memes, the company went on to write its history.

With Election Day projected to break records in the Information Technology market, Twitter partnered with BuzzFeed to capitalize on this rare occasion. Twitter tapped BuzzFeed to help it organize its live video streaming service.

In a statement, Jackdaw Research chief analyst Jan Dawson said, "It comes down to the fact that Twitter is still the platform for what's happening right now, while Facebook focuses on showing users the things they're most likely to engage with, which may or may not be the most recent content."

Trump emerged as the winner of the 2016 Presidential race garnering a total of 276 electoral votes. Trump later posted his first tweet as the President-elect of the United States.

"Such a beautiful and important evening! The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before," he wrote.
