General Motors is set to be the first company to offer 200-mile range electronic vehicle (EV) with the pricing of less than $40,000 before tax credits. The car is likely to make EVs more mainstream and affordable. General Motors managed to beat its competitor Tesla in this area. Elon Musk's car company is scheduled to start production of its Model 3 in the mid-2017.

Tesla is looking to produce as many as 500,000 Model 3 cars a year at its Fremont, California factory. The company is planning to upgrade the factory for this purpose. Model 3 has received about 400,000 car reservations. The reservation is made with the deposit of $1,000, which is fully refundable.

According to a test conducted by Motor Trend, Bolt seemed to hold its own against Tesla's Model 3 and Model S 60. However, Model S 60 car comes with a price tag of $66,000. Currently, this is the cheapest Tesla car available on the market. The test also concluded that Bolt offers better performance than other short-range electric vehicles.

General Motors' Chevy Bolt is a hatchback and comes with thin front seats to offer more leg room. The car is expected to provide 238-mile range. The cars will be offered to drivers who are willing to work with General Motors' ride sharing partner, Lyft.
