The plan presented showed the company's goal to support and establish connectivity. Zuckerberg said "through our efforts with Internet.org, we've connected 40 million people based on our best estimate." He added that the social media site's Express Wifi Program empowers businesses due to the availability of internet connection in their communities.

The initiative program has a growth rate of 166 percent yearly. Although it received criticisms due to its alleged violation of net neutrality, it has shown significant growth since it was established in 2014. With three million users at its launch, the numbers boomed to 15 million in 2015. The figure grew to 25 million in May this year.

Users connected through the initiative also added to the monthly user growth of the social media site from 3.63 percent to 4.67 percent. In the last quarter, Facebook recorded 1.79 billion users.

The company plans to utilize its drones and satellites to bringing internet access to its target communities especially for those who cannot afford data plans. Internet.org is already available in 49 nations. There are speculations that it will arrive in the United States soon.

The 40 million individuals reached by Facebook's Internet.org initiative is equivalent to 0.5 percent of the world's total population.
