A seemingly false claim for HIV/AIDS cure is being investigated by authorities in Ghana. A food supplement company allegedly claims and market their product as a cure for HIV and AIDS, leading patients to abandon Antiretroviral (ART) drug treatment.

The food supplement marketing firm, Centre for Awareness or COA, has been ordered by the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (ERCC) and the Regional AIDS Committee to stop all their ads on a cure for HIV/AIDS. The committee sees their move as a form of deception, somehow undermining the health of patients.

According to reports, some Persons Living with HIV and AIDS(PLWA) were allegedly coerced b COA agents in buying the so-called HIV cure drug. As a result of such scheme, many PLWA abandons their treatments or ART, leading to death or worsening of the condition.

Samuel Kwakye, Regional Director of the FDA in Ghana, highlighted the fact that COA FS is registered as a food supplement. Such product is not a cure or an alternative to Anti-retro viral (ART) drug, for it has no therapeutic effect on HIV, AIDS or any disease for that matter.

Now, this would not be the first time that an African government agency has warned people about alternative medications. In retrospect, Nigerian authority has also reminded patients to stick with the currently accepted HIV treatment.

"As far as HIV is concerned in Nigeria, it remains a chronic ailment that the cure is yet to be found. Those living with the disease must take their drugs for life and that is why adherence to counseling was introduced to educate the HIV patients on the need to take the ARV drugs as long as they live," Vanguard quoted Dr. Uche Okoro of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Agency as saying.

As of the current writing, there is still no definitive HIV/AIDS cure available or developed. Most experts would highly suggest using the Antiretroviral (ART) drug as first-line drug treatments.
